Course Description

Teacher in Charge:

Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Level 1 genetics and life-processes units of work.

Year 12 Biology builds on knowledge gained in Year 11 and develops greater self-directed research and investigation skills.  There is a stronger focus on ecology, with a field-trip in term one to Pukaha to study Takahe.

The study of Biology seeks to explain the nature of living things and their interrelationships, how evolution links life processes and ecology, and the impact that humans have on all forms of life. In this course, you will learn about key life processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, the function of enzymes and the cell cycle. We also look at how DNA provides the instructions for the growth, development and function of living things and the importance of variation for survival. Practical investigations and field trips will provide you with opportunities to experience how scientists learn more about living organisms and their inter-relationships.

Course Overview

Term 1
Rocky shore ecology OR mud flat ecology to look at zonation patterns (AS91158).

Week 5 Field Trip to gather data for the AS91158.

Remainder of term on AS91156 Life Processes at a Cellular Level.

Term 2
AS91155 Demonstrate understanding of adaptation of plants or animals to their way of life.

AS91159 Demonstrate understanding of gene expression.

Term 3
AS91153 Carry out a practical investigation in a biology context, with supervision. This requires the students to plan a method, conduct an experiment and write a conclusion and discussion regarding their findings by drawing on knowledge gained in AS91155.

AS91157 Demonstrate understanding of genetic variation and change. This is an extension of AS90958 from NCEA Level 1 and leads into AS91605

Term 4
Revision and Exam practise followed by external exams.
