Course Description

Year 10 Art

Year ten is a general visual art course designed to prepare students for Level 1 NCEA Visual Art. Students will complete a variety of tasks with a variety of primarily drawing, painting, printmaking and design methods. Students will be given a range of artist models and will be expected to learn how to analyse art works and incorporate the ideas and techniques of these artists in to their own work in an original manner. Students will be given increasing amounts of choice in to subject matter and artist models as the year progresses. At the end of the year students will complete the 1.5, 4 credit NCEA internal assessment.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will begin extending their knowledge of observational drawing and the use of a variety of drawing and painting materials. They will learn how to analyse an art work and learn about compositional conventions.
Students will be introduced to a variety of artist models and learn how to develop their own ideas.

Term 2
Students will continue to extend their knowledge of artist models, materials and techniques in drawing, painting and printmaking.
Students will learn about drypoint etching and mixed media.
Students will explore contemporary Maori art.
Students will expected to explore more of their own ideas with guidance.

Term 3
Students will continue to extend their knowledge of artist models, materials and techniques in drawing, painting and printmaking.
Students will complete a multi coloured woodcut.
Students will learn some fundamental design techniques.

Term 4
Students will complete the 1.5 "Cultural piece" NCEA level 1 assessment. They will produce an individual Solway figure mural to be hung around the school.
Students will explore contemporary design methods.
